Food for the Soul!

This entire post is going to be about the awesome food experiences Chris and I have shared in the last week. It amazes me how food... good or bad... can do wonderful things for your soul.

This week, Chris beat me home from work 4 out of 5 nights.  On the nights that he gets home first, he helps out and starts preparing the dinner we have previously discussed having.  One night this week he got home first and honestly, I had just been too busy to even think about what we could eat for dinner.  These collections of events lead to Chris looking at what we had on hand and then coming up with dinner plans.  He did wonderful!  He found a recipe on the back of a box of rice for "Easy Chicken Masala".  He got out all of the ingredients and had started prepare the meal by the time I got home.  So on this night... I got to be the assistant in the kitchen.

When I did get home to help we noticed a few things about this recipe.  First, it didn't really give any cook times for anything.  Secondly, the recipe didn't have how high or low you should cook anything on, it just said, "Cook it" or "heat it".  So Chris and I went to work making this meal.  We had so much fun!  We talked and we laughed and had a blast.  We guessed to fill in missing information or wrong information in the recipe.  For example, this recipe said to cook our 4 chicken breasts for 7 minutes on the stove top.  After 7 minutes, we looked at the chicken and knew it wasn't cooked all the way through so we cooked it for longer.  I was supposed to reduce the masala wine... but it didn't tell me on what temperature or for how long.  Let's just say... I guessed wrong here.

In the end... we had a meal, chicken that was burnt to a crisp on the outside and cooked perfectly on the inside, watery wine sauce that tasted awful, crunched up crackers that were supposed to be like toasted bread crumbs but in the end got all mushy in our undercooked sauce, and rice.  Truth be told... only the rice came out edible.  After trying our creation we ended up laughing our tails off and eating leftover pizza.  What's so funny about this event is that we had more fun cooking together that night.  It was a total newlywed moment that I wouldn't trade for anything.  My only regret?  I didn't take a picture of our creation.

The night after our chicken masala debacle Chris got home first again but this time he made one of my favorite meals… Cuban Chicken on the grill!  So yummy!!!

Last night we went out for a date night.  We both got home at a decent time and decided to go out and have some fun.  Chris got the idea to take me to a Hibachi grill.  The first two we tried to go to were closed.  This was a big surprise because they had been good restaurants in pretty good, highly populated areas.  We finally found a Hibachi grill that was open and had the best time.  We had a drink with dinner and enjoyed an excellent meal.  Like with most Hibachi grills there was more food than we would ever eat but it was so good you don’t want to stop.  We had the best conversations, laughed, and shared our week with one another.  Overall, it was a great date night.

On a side note… my coworkers and I went to lunch at this great place called O’Carr’s.  It was awesome!  It was probably the best chicken salad I have ever eaten.  But the best part was the cheesecakes.  They had blueberry, strawberry, and hot chocolate cheesecake and each was divine.  The owners were there manning the register, waiting on tables, and talking to customers.  They were so nice!  You felt like they had known you for years and were close family friends.  O’Carr’s is totally on my list to take Chris too.  If you’re looking for a cozy place with excellent food you should check them out!

I have always loved food.  I often say that I work out so that I can eat.  But this last week, food and the adventures and relationships that went along with the food gave me more than nutrition for my body… I feel like it all fed my soul.
